Too Debased for the Base

Yes, Alabama, you’re better than many of us thought. You refused to stoop to conquer. Not that low, anyway. Not as low as Trump and Bannon (photo) would have you stoop.

Not to the level of the likes of Roy Moore

For the first time in decades, Alabama, you voted a Democrat into the US Senate last night. Even the state that bred George Wallace couldn’t take Trump’s kind of ugliness any more.

Let this be a sign to you, Trump. And to you, Bannon. And to the craven Republicans who put up with you because they feared your base.

You and your ilk are proving too debased even for your base.

They might be a basket of deplorables, as Hillary (unwisely) observed. But even deplorables draw the line somewhere. They balked at molesting 14-year-old girls. They cringed at quoting the Bible as an excuse for breaking the law. They rejected the raw racism of the white supremacists and the atrocities of sexual predators. And they refused to embrace obscenity and vulgarity as an alternative to “political correctness.”

Not all of them, of course. But enough to turn the tide in favor of decency.

You will hear that it was turnout by black voters that sank Moore. Or an epiphany experienced by college educated white voters. And those were undeniably important factors in the stunning upset by Democrat Doug Jones (photo at right).

But I think the clincher came from the base. Trump’s loyal followers backed away this time. Many stayed home.  Some wrote in the names of other Republicans. (You think a few might even have voted for the Democrat?)

Surely,  the Republicans in Congress will get the message.

Trump is turning out to be a toothless tiger. They need fear him no more.

The Senate race in Alabama

  1. Well today’s Rumors on the 13th day of Christmas is Omarosa Manigault was handcuffed and escorted off the White House property no longer allowed to return. Darn it, I wish that was Trump.
    One Love, Eddie

  2. It’s ironic that such sexual allegations work with Conservatives.

The Left has been known to ridicule Conservatives on the idea that “sex necessarily leads to pregnancy.” Of course, that’s an inaccurate caricature of Conservative belief, which is that pregnancy is a natural consequence and that contraception has a non-zero failure rate. Considering such a meaningful outcome, such a failure rate might properly be termed a “meaningful failure rate.”

Conservatives might cringe at the thought of “molesting 14-year-old girls” because people so young might not be equipped to understand the full meaning of sexuality and its consequences. Indeed, from a Conservative perspective, practically even the entire Left doesn’t understand.

In contrast, by the standards of the Left, the age of consent should be lowered to 14.

By that standard, a 14 year old girl can give legal consent and is therefore not a helpless little girl, but legally on a par with a grown woman.

Conservatives tend to believe in God, which is consistant with the concept of objective meaning. In contrast, much of the Left embraces an Atheist philosophy, which is consistent with the belief that any objective meaning is only an illusion. Then it follows that sex and its consequences don’t have to have meaning, beyond animals and biological processes.

That race was exceptionally heated because of what Roy Moore’s candidacy represented.

Then suddenly, predictably unproven allegations were shaken like a scary halloween mask.

If that’s why Roy Moore lost, it proves Conservatives to be weak indeed, partly because they don’t understand the Left’s alternative.

  3. Hallelujah! Good for you Alabama. Some time ago I voiced an unjust opinion that America deserved Trump because they voted him in. An American Facebook friend reminded me that America did not vote for Trump. Hillary actually won the majority vote by nearly three million votes but the system allowed the Republicans to rig the vote in his favor. Now that Trump and his cronies are showing their true colors, I believe they will lose big time in the next election. Anyway, as the investigations into Trumps money laundering and his involvement in the Russian interference in the last election comes to light, I believe we will see the will of the majority of Americans take place and Trump will be arrested for the mobster that he is and impeached. Billy G.

  4. Good triumphed! Amorosa is escorted out by security and Bannon looks ineffectual and finally proves that there is a bar that is too low even for Conservatives to go.
