Tea Party’s Death Throes

The Tea Party may be dead but its spirit lives on like the toxin in a scorpion’s stinger.

And that poison has proven lethal enough to kill the Farm Bill, leaving Republican leaders in a quandary and Congress floundering helplessly.

In voting down the bill, the Tea Party rump – now known as the Freedom Caucus for reasons that elude me – allied themselves with Democrats.

Talk about strange bedfellows!

There was a lot to hate in the Farm Bill. It Scrooged food stamp families, for example.

And, of course, the Democrats couldn’t stomach the idea of making poor families go hungry.

But, of course, that’s not why the Freedom Caucus blocked the Farm Bill. That mean spirited crowd would have enjoyed putting the screws to poor families.

No, from what I read, they voted against the Farm Bill to protest bipartisan legislation that would have given the betrayed Dreamers a break.

You know about the Dreamers of course. They are the children of illegal immigrants and were brought here so young that they had no choice in the matter.

President Obama decided that it would be unfair to punish them for their parents’ transgression. And kicking them out of the only country they’ve ever known would be inhumane.

So he decided to give them a special exemption that would allow them to stay in America.

As you might expect, Trump revoked the Obama exemption as soon as he took office.

Republicans don’t usually believe in tempering justice with mercy. They cheered when Trump cracked down on the Dreamers.

But some Republican members of Congress were worried about the Hispanic vote in their districts so they teamed with Democrats to introduce legislation mitigating the Trump decree.

Naturally, the Freedom Caucus is mad as hell about that. They want a draconian bill punishing the likes of Dreamers and favoring ethnically desirable immigrants.

To show their distaste for the bipartisan legislation – and flex their muscles – the Freedom Caucus picked on the Farm Bill.

Yes, I know, the two issues have nothing to do with each other. But when were Tea party militants ever susceptible to logic?

I am left hoping the Republicans’ inherent spitefulness will divide them so drastically that a Big Blue Wave can wash them out of Congress in November.

And I pray that will end the Tea Party infection at last.

  1. Firstly, your cartoon today is priceless, George. Secondly, I am not of the tea party. I remember Sarah Palin and she was a wild card. I believe she cost McCain his run. I guess Palin is OK in alaska–but that is a bit of a wild place. Further south she needs a choke chain. Concerning the dreamers’ children, they should be given the opportunity to apply for citizenship without having to be deported. If any are not desirable, then they get deported. That is compassionate enough–do you not think? George, no government can knowingly allow some people to break the law–that is encouraging lawlessness. The line has to be drawn. You mentioned you once worked in canada so, you might want to hear that facebook announced today that the Canadian prime minister said new refugees will be allowed to go into the army and receive proper military training and all the benefits. What do you think of this? Maybe Trudeau thinks it’s a form of work fare as many are now on welfare–putting them in the army ensures they do work for the dole–but surely this can backfire. Do you want to touch this issue? Best to you,George. This is a new entry not a duplicate as your blog is declaring? ????????????? Are we being censored??????

  2. Two items to consider today: 1. a citizen posted the news on Facebook that Trudeau Canada’s pm said new refugees should go into the army for proper military training and benefits. What do you think of this? Maybe he feels it’s a form of work fare as most are now on welfare. So, this would have them work for the dole while being watched and controlled –but do you not think this could backfire? You mentioned you once worked in Canada, George –do you want to pick up this issue? Another thought maybe Trudeau is tired of being prime minister and wants to be voted out. 2. Another matter of interest: some scientists are predicting a pole shift–have you heard? Apparently the reason for the global weird weather is no longer global warming caused by human carbon footprint. What next I wonder. I am so glad I am old. One foot in heaven and on on the banana skin. C’est la vie mon am.

  4. I am always entertained by this guy. He doesn’t believe people should abide by laws. We just make exceptions for everyone. I still can not understand the Left’s train of thought. It is like Common Sense is not allowable or viable. It’s a shame really. I guess hundreds of thousands who sneak into Jamaica would help the economy and improve living conditions as well. Yeah, just let them stay. And live off of their socialized economic system which i think works fine enough for itself, but not if it were basically invaded by people that want to leave baggage behind. It’s sad really, I am fiscally conservative, socially moderate, but this notion of anybody should be allowed to do whatever they want is absurd. Nice going George, make us look like idiots, because we have laws. Just like everybody else does. Joy, thank You!

  5. So Chris K. you think Trump has laws eh? America is in total disarray and Trump has set an example that it’s OK to lie and abuse women. The world is realizing that America cannot be trusted to abide by any of their agreements or promises they make. They are not the champions and leaders of the free world as before. They have made it clear that their only interest is for themselves. They will find out soon enough that inclusion only leads to destruction. By the way, what hundreds of thousands are sneaking into Jamaica?

  6. Oh, Joy, don’t be in such a hurry to believe everything you see on face book. I live in Canada and have’t heard our Prime Minister say such a thing. Anyway Canada is vastly under populated and could do with many immigrants. None of these immigrants are shooting up our children. And isn’t it interesting that the Scandinavian countries like Denmark and Sweden who are socialists are the happiest people on the Planet? Billy G.

  7. Hey Billy: let’s stick to the issues on the table. Illegal entry into any country is not immigration. Refugees are not immigrants until they are checked and given landed immigrant status. If I recall, it is a Canadian army officer who put that item on Facebook — you say you live there so, check it out for yourself. I did not make the announcement nor did I say I believe it, I asked George if he wanted to check into it. Also, if he wanted to check out the possibility of a pole shift. I am not naive, I check all information out, if it concerns/interests me.
Trump has been president for only 5 months–how can he be blamed for all that has gone wrong in America? You insists he lies…..he abuses women……I don’t believe anything I hear. I look for empirical evidence. While we are on the subject, have you ever lied? Ever abused a woman? Consensual flirting or sex ls not abuse. Drugging and raping a woman is abuse. Beating your wife is abuse. Incidentally, the picture on Facebook with that announcement was of Trudeau and his minister (of defence? ) a guy in a turban– I can’t remember his name. You live in Canada — check it out. We are only exchanging information and ideas on this blog– not competing or fighting. Relax.
