One of the things I love to do is talk to Jamaicans who lived in Jamaica before I was born (I am trying not to say older people..dwl). Many of the discussion do not start out about Jamaica but they eventually go there. This past week the discussion was on cancer as we had a friend’s wife just died from the disease. My in-law’s started to reminisce about sickness in Jamaica. They explained that in the country there were times when someone would get sick from what they now believe is cancer but no one knew what it was. People were very secretive about sickness and some did not go to a doctor. As the person continued to lose weight rumors would go around the district that “Duppy Suck Dem”. People believed that a “duppy” was sucking the life out of the person.
